Service Description
A perfect course for beginners and improvers to learn about the craft whilst upcycling your own traditional or modern chair or stool. The classes are very informal and there is always a great range of furniture being worked on, so lots to see and learn. During the term you will be given one-to-one advice about the best way to achieve professional results with your chosen project. Often there are options! During the course your project will have the old upholstery stripped off and prepared for its new stuffing, before being completed with top cover and trim. More advanced techniques for improvers can include lashing springs, deep buttoning, or working with a sprung unit seat base. Demonstrations may include how to stretch and fix webbing in place using a webbing stretcher, first and second stuffing on a seat, stitching using double ended or curved needles and deep or float buttoning. For beginners suitable furniture pieces might include a drop in dining seat, or stuff over dining chair, or a stool. For improvers armchairs with double coil springs and even small chaise longue. Just be aware that the projects need to be small enough to be brought to class each week. I regret that there are no storage facilities on site. If you have a project that you would like some advice on do send me a photo of it and I would be happy to talk things through with you. There will be a good range of upholstery materials and sundries that you can purchase from me, such as tacks, hessian, stuffings, wadding and calico. For projects that require foam I will advise what you need to purchase and give details of local suppliers. Please read the FAQ page before booking a place. This will not only some answer queries about the classes, but also the usual housekeeping relating to health & safety. By booking a place you are deemed to have read the FAQs. If you have any questions please do ask. Always happy to help. Pippa
